Key Skills:

Adaptability

Photography

Communication

Adaptability - Travelling to Guyana in South America was a life changing experience, I was able to live a very different way of life and enjoy a culture that is so different to the of the UK. During the trip I visited several different settlements and towns, staying with different families and saw just how different life should be only a few miles apart. Being able to stay with different people that live in such different ways, not only different from living in the UK but vastly different from one another even just a few miles apart, was truly a privilege and I was able to live very happily in all the varying circumstances.

Photography - I was totally in awe of the natural beauty of the country and fascinated by the architecture, in particular the houses. It has been common practice for quite some time for people to buy plots of land and build their own homes, as a result of this there are a huge variety of different homes, no two buildings looking the same and quite often an enormous difference in the structural integrity of one house compared to its next door neighbours. The photographic documentation I have collected will contribute to further research into architecture and people’s relationship to space.

Communication - On one excursion to an amerindian settlement in the amazon rainforest we were lucky enough to meet the British High Commissioner in Guyana, after a short conversation he agreed to meet with us later that week to discuss plans for visual arts in Guyana. I am currently working on a proposal for a cultural exchange between British artists and Guyanese artists to take place next year. Though English is the first language of Guyana the dialect is very different so communication was confusing at times but I was able to build strong relationships with people I had not met before and continue these relationships after having returned to the UK.
